Killing The Death Penalty
February 6th, 2023
In your weekly reading assignments, read the article written by Brad J. Bushman, Ph.D. entitled “It’s Time to Kill the Death Penalty.” Dr. Bushman indicates eight (8) reasons why he believes the United States should join over 140 other countries in abolishing the death penalty. In response to the article, write a letter to Dr. Bushman either in support of, or in opposition to, his position. Your paper should be written in APA format for two (2) pages.
Answer
In support of Dr. Bushman’s position:
- The death penalty is a cruel and inhumane form of punishment that has been abolished by many countries worldwide.
- The death penalty is often used disproportionately against marginalized communities and people of color, raising concerns of racial bias.
- There have been instances of wrongful convictions, meaning that innocent people could be sentenced to death.
- The death penalty does not have a deterrent effect on crime, and there is no evidence to suggest that it reduces crime rates.
- The cost of the death penalty is much higher than life imprisonment, putting a strain on already stretched government resources.
In opposition to Dr. Bushman’s position:
- The death penalty serves as a just punishment for the most heinous crimes, such as murder, and serves to protect society from dangerous criminals.
- Life imprisonment does not offer the same level of closure and justice for victims and their families.
- The appeals process and modern technology minimize the risk of wrongful convictions.
- The death penalty serves as a deterrent, sending a strong message that certain crimes will not be tolerated and will be punished severely.
