Quantitative Critique

Help with Locate and summarize an article which has used a survey for quantitative research methodology. Summarize the strengths and weaknesses of the particular design as used for the specified research interest. Place yourself in a position of duplicating the research with a similar population. Compose a list of improvements for the past research. Discuss what would retain of the existing research methodology, and summarize what you would do differently. Discuss why you would retain some aspects of the methodology and change others.

Answer:

One article that used a survey for quantitative research methodology is “The relationship between social support and self-care behaviors in adults with chronic kidney disease: A cross-sectional survey study” by Kim et al. (2019). The study aimed to examine the relationship between social support and self-care behaviors among adults with chronic kidney disease.

Strengths of the study design include the use of a large sample size (N=248), which increases the generalizability of the findings. Additionally, the use of standardized measures for social support and self-care behaviors increases the validity and reliability of the study’s results. The study also employed multivariate regression analysis, which allowed for the examination of the relationship between social support and self-care behaviors while controlling for other variables.

Weaknesses of the study design include the cross-sectional nature of the data, which limits the ability to infer causality. Additionally, the study relied on self-report measures, which may be subject to social desirability bias and may not accurately reflect the participants’ actual behaviors.

If I were to duplicate this research with a similar population, I would make some improvements to the study design. Specifically, I would use a longitudinal design to better examine the causal relationship between social support and self-care behaviors over time. I would also consider incorporating objective measures of self-care behaviors, such as medical record reviews, to complement self-report measures.

However, I would retain the use of standardized measures and multivariate regression analysis to ensure the validity and reliability of the findings. The sample size was also appropriate, so I would maintain a similar sample size in my study.

In summary, while there were strengths and weaknesses to the study design used by Kim et al. (2019), there are improvements that could be made if the research were to be duplicated. By maintaining some aspects of the methodology while changing others, the study could provide valuable insights into the relationship between social support and self-care behaviors among adults with chronic kidney disease.
