Early Wars Discussion

This is your last discussion in the class and it deals with the French and Indian War, the American Revolution and the War of 1812. You are to read Chapters 14 and 15 in the text, read the lecture on early wars, and watch some of the videos on these early wars. For this assignment you are going to go back in time and live at the time of ONE of these wars. You are going to describe what you feel would be the major causes of that chosen war.

Finally you are going to describe what you feel is the most important battle of the war that you choose

French and Indian War: The French and Indian War was fought between 1754 and 1763, primarily in North America. The main causes of the war were disputes between the British and French over territory, specifically the Ohio River Valley, which both sides claimed as their own. The French had established a series of forts in the area, which the British saw as a threat to their westward expansion. Additionally, both sides were competing for control of the fur trade in the region.

The most important battle of the French and Indian War was the Battle of Quebec, which took place in 1759. The battle was fought between the British and French forces and resulted in a decisive British victory. The British under General James Wolfe were able to scale the cliffs outside of the city and surprise the French, who were not expecting an attack from that direction. The French commander, Louis-Joseph de Montcalm, was killed in the battle, and his death marked a turning point in the war. With the fall of Quebec, the British were able to take control of Canada, which ended the war in their favor.

American Revolution: The American Revolution was fought between 1775 and 1783, and it was a conflict between Great Britain and its 13 North American colonies, which sought independence. The main causes of the war were British attempts to exert greater control over the colonies, which were met with resistance from the colonists. Specifically, the colonists objected to new taxes imposed by the British government, which they felt were unfair and did not represent their interests. Additionally, the colonists believed that they should have representation in the British government.

The most important battle of the American Revolution was the Battle of Saratoga, which took place in 1777. The battle was fought between British forces under General John Burgoyne and American forces under General Horatio Gates. The American victory at Saratoga was significant because it convinced the French to formally ally with the Americans in their fight for independence. With French assistance, the Americans were able to turn the tide of the war and eventually win their independence.

War of 1812: The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain from 1812 to 1815. The main causes of the war were British impressment of American sailors, which violated American sovereignty, and British support for Native American resistance to American expansion in the West. Additionally, the United States wanted to assert its independence and prove its legitimacy as a nation.

The most important battle of the War of 1812 was the Battle of New Orleans, which took place in 1815. The battle was fought between British forces under General Edward Pakenham and American forces under General Andrew Jackson. The American victory at New Orleans was significant because it took place after the Treaty of Ghent, which had already ended the war. However, news of the treaty had not yet reached the combatants, and the battle demonstrated American military prowess and bolstered national pride. The victory also secured American control over the Mississippi River and the surrounding territory, which was vital to American commerce and expansion.
