Stress Management
Stress is a physical response to a number of external experiences due to which human mind faces emotional troubles. Necessarily, such a situation demands psychological counseling. I have gone through the assignment and found out solutions to cure an emotionally stressed out human being. Any experience that gives birth to emotions such as fear, anger, sadness, disgust or guilt can be a reason for stress. Therefore, to manage stress I would at first try to make them accept the emotion that they are experiencing and be empathetic towards it. Let us assume a scene in which there are 150 people in an office and among them 40 are undergoing stress due to an upcoming meeting to be held in the afternoon. They are stressed because they are speculating about what is going to happen, how they would react in front of the leaders, and how it would affect their career. I would follow humanistic counseling propounded by Carl Rogers that says we have conflicting minds deprived of any incoherent and unified self. According to Rogers, (2015, January), we want to become the best humankind possible in earth .i.e. the ‘ideal self’ but we do not always follow the things that help us achieving it. There is a lack of balance or congruity between this ‘ideal self’ and people’s actual behavior. Stress is borne out of this conflict. In this case, I would tell them to prepare the data necessary for the meeting, prepare a complete schedule of what to do and what to avoid. They should do their work and let others do their part and thus, work cooperatively. Another major thing is mindfulness .i.e. concentration on the current situation. I would tell them to concentrate on food while eating, on walk while walking or focus on any other thing that they do now without mere speculating about what they will do or what they can do. They should engage in an interpersonal communication about any other matter but not about the future meeting. I have found out that much of human behavior is based on habits that they do not want to change. My object of stress management would be to develop in them a habit of mindfulness and healthy workplace behavior.
