Answer:
The main purpose of this assignment is to write a Reading response paper with the help of the Gabor Maté “Stop Treating Drug Users as Criminals” (2013) and “How do we heal trauma suffered by native communities?” (2016).
Gabor (2013) in his study of “Stop Treating the Drug Users as Criminals”, have laid an emphasis on the problem of the drug users who are treated as criminals by the society. Being a doctor, he has witnessed these harms on a daily basis. It has been cleared with the help of the scientific literature that addictive behaviors are triggered by emotional stress. “It is discovered that people are likely to turn to drugs because of their psychological trauma during childhood and depression developed in childhood.” (Mate, 2013).
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association- the individuals having a history of childhood abuse is associated with increased with augmented reactivity of stress, which is enhanced further by the experience of additional trauma in adulthood. The subject revolves around the trauma of the addict repeatedly by harassment, disease, ostracism, dire poverty, the anxious hunt for the basis of the substance of reliance, the violence of the subversive word of drug and unsympathetic punishment by the hands of the law (Mate, 2013).
According to Bruce Perry, who is a child psychiatrist and brain researcher, it the individuals wants to construct surroundings that are safe and conventional as well as relationally developed, subsequently all the additional aspects concerned with the substance abuse and reliance will be easier to a much extent (Mate, 2013).
If the potential of the individuals will be supported for healthy alteration, then there occurs a need to stop imposing the devastating stress on the life of the individuals which is already hampered. Proper nutrition, accommodation, the controlled stipulation of their materials of dependence, sympathetic care, and counseling, are what the majority of the drug addicts require if the individuals are to assist them from their devitalizing habits (Mate, 2013).
The explanation regarding the use of the drug among First Nations Communities and the Attawapiskat suicide crisis in 2016 can be carried out with the help of another study by Maté’ which is “How do we heal trauma suffered by native communities?”The individuals need to ask questions to themselves regarding the concern of a country to heal trauma influences the misery of several residential communities (Mate, 2016).
The interactions of individuals and institutions with the native people need to become intensely trauma-informed. Psychiatrists, doctors, policy-makers, teachers, judges and social workers should understand the impacts of trauma on the mentality as well as the behavior of humans, and they should also know how to deal with it. The practices that destroy the families and lives of people must be stopped, and different forms of evenhandedness must be developed and associated with the native traditions and in discussion with the First Nations (Mate, 2016).
Financial, as well as societal circumstances that lead to desolation must be dealt with the extreme urgency. The individuals can discover the resources to assist persons who are being victimized from the olden times (Mate, 2016).
